Who Should Win Best Picture

The 92nd Academy Awards is being held on February 9, 2020. There are lots of great films nominated this year. The following is who I think should win Best Picture, but you never know when it comes to the Oscars. There are often surprises.

Best Picture Nominees

  • 1917
  • Ford V. Ferrari
  • Joker
  • Once Upon a Time in Hollywood
  • Parasite
  • The Irishman
  • Little Women
  • JoJo Rabbit
  • Marriage Story

Rumors are that only 5 of them are really contenders for this award. I agree that it should and will likely be one of those five. I will focus on those.

I really enjoyed this movie. It was based off stories the director’s grandfather told him. Some of the actors had relatives who had eerily similar experiences in World War I. It seemed to really connect with them. It was a heart-felt movie with superb acting. The cinematography with the “one continuous shot” was a big bonus for most people although I didn’t personally find it a big deal. It has done very well in the awards season so far. It won for Best Drama film at the Golden Globes and won best film at the BAFTAs. It is a strong contender.

I LOVED this movie. This is a Korean film with English subtitles. An Oscar for Best film has never been awarded to foreign language film. Regardless this may be the year. It covered a lot of hot topics- class inequality, capitalism, and violence. It was charming yet very disturbing. Captivating and entertaining.

Disturbing movie. Full of violence and unstable mental illness. It made me cringe. I spent two hours terrified and completely stressed out. I hated the movie but was incredibly impressed by the outstanding acting. Joaquin Phoenix was absolutely phenomenal. You were completely sucked in and experienced his true transformation into the Joker. The film has done very well so far in the award season. It has had 151 nominations and has won 57 awards to date.

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood
I didn’t particularly care for this movie. I may have been the only one, but I was pretty bored. I think Tarantino’s movies are strange and too “off” for me. This film has some big players in it like DiCaprio, Pitt, Robbie and was written and directed by Tarantino. This will give it a boost. They are Hollywood darlings. This film has also done well during this award season- 298 nominations with 108 wins to date.

JoJo Rabitt
I didn’t particularly care for this movie. I may have been the only one, but I was pretty boredI liked this movie but nearly as much as 1917 and Parasite. It is another war movie but vastly different from 1917. This movie starts out as a comedy (although quite inappropriate comedic material) and then slowly moves into a more dramatic film. It is sad and absolutely disgusting that a war like this was actually fought. The acting was good but not quite as strong as in some of the other movies. It did win the People’s Choice Award at the Toronto Film Festival.

So who will win?

I really hope Parasite wins. I think this was a much better film top to bottom than the other films. Unfortunately, I do not think it will. I think that 1917 will actually take the prize. It was a great movie, so I won’t be too crushed if it wins. I am afraid that Once Upton a Time in Hollywood may take it because of the high-profile actors and director. I really do not think it deserves to win and I will be disappointed if it does. We will have to wait and see.

Who do you think will win?
